How to Find a Teaching Job without a College or University Degree
Teaching English abroad without a College or University Degree is it possible?
These days Teaching English Abroad has become very popular especially amongst young people and gap year students fresh out of college. Teaching English as a Foreign Language is a great opportunity for young and old alike to travel the world and gather work experience Teaching English. Having a University Degree or some kind of College Diploma will make finding better paid employment easier. For those people who don’t have a College Degree there are still many options available to them.
Before you set off and start your Teaching Career. We highly recommend that you do some research as to what qualifications are required in the country you wish to Teach in. Some countries require that you are a degree holder in order to get the necessary work permit, Working Visa and teachers license. If this is the case in regards to the country that you have chosen then maybe you’d be better off choosing another destination in which to Teach. However, do not be too disheartened as there can be exceptions to these rules too! The most popular Teaching destinations do require that you are a Degree holder. These destinations include… Thailand, Singapore, Japan, a lot of European countries and the middle east.
Our advice for finding a job that doesn’t require a Degree is to try places like South America, central America parts of Eastern Europe and Asia. You’ll find that a lot of the main employers do value Teachers who’ve had a College Education, these are the ideal qualifications they’d like their Teachers to have. However, given their locations and an overall shortage of Native English Speaking Teachers in those countries. You should find yourself being welcomed with open arms, so long as you can fulfill the other requirements that they demand. These being… Native English Speaker, having had previous Teaching experience, possibly other qualifications such as TEFL / TESOL & CELTA certificates. Places like China & Russia are two very popular Teaching destinations where requirements are a bit more relaxed and Teachers without a degree can find work.
In order to impress a potential employer you need to work on building a good resume. A lot of the big international & smaller private language schools view previous experience and the ability to be able to live, work and blend successfully into other cultures as part of your qualifications. You also could mention your experiences of living and studying abroad, your qualifications and any Teaching experience that you may have had.
The next step is to enroll on a TESOL / TEFL Course. TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. This Certification is held in high regard in the industry. You could also enroll on the CELTA Course. CELTA stands for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, this is also a highly prized and respected Teaching qualification. TEFL / CELTA courses can cost anywhere from 300 pounds upwards depending upon the course duration and your TEFL Course provider. If you can’t afford this there are other courses available. Shorter introduction TEFL Courses can be a lot cheaper and shorter in duration than the standard TEFL / TESOL Course. Normally to complete a CELTA / TESOL Course will take you on average about 4 weeks of intensive study.
After you have graduated the TEFL / CELTA course you’ll be equipped to successfully prepare classes, curriculum and teach reading, writing and speaking. You’ll also have gained a good insight into the structure of the English Language, grammar & vocabulary.
After all that all you need to do is get a job Teaching English in a school of your choice in a country of your choice. There are many ways to go about accomplishing this. As mentioned before people lacking degrees can pick up work in places like Cambodia, China, Russia and even Thailand. Although officially you’re supposed to have a Degree to Teach in Thailand, lots of people don’t and there are still schools willing to hire Teachers without Degrees in Asia.
